Tavernkeep

The Rift Denizen is a Pre-Hardmode boss intended to be fought in late Pre-Hardmode or early Hardmode, at about the same time as the Wall of Flesh. It can technically be fought at any point in the game, and defeating it grants access to the Fractal Dimension and all of its pre-Golem loot, but it is a very difficult battle that becomes significantly easier with early Hardmode gear.

While it is alive, its exclusive music New Perspective will play; if the Polarities Mod Music sidemod is not enabled, the vanilla track Boss 3 will play instead.

Spawn

The Rift Denizen does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it by releasing an Instability anywhere after catching it in the Space layer with a Bug Net.

Behavior

Rift Denizen exists in the background and cannot be damaged directly. It attacks the player by summoning rifts, which can be damaged to hurt the boss. Rift denizen will alternate between the following attacks at random, not using an attack until all of the prior attacks have been used at least once, and with a 50% chance to use the first unused attack instead of a randomly selected attack if not every attack has been used. All of its attacks inflict fractalization in expert mode.

  • Rift Hexagon - The boss summons six rifts around the player, which fire projectiles on the chords between them. This attack is repeated four times.
  • Rift Claws - The boss summons three rifts in sequence in the direction that the player is moving (or in random positions around the player if they're stationary), which create sets of four claws that extend, spin around the rift, and retract.
  • Rift Walls - The boss summons a set of three rifts in the direction that the player is moving (or in random positions around the player if they're stationary), which shoot projectiles directly at the player. This attack is repeated four times.
  • Star Polygon Beams - The boss summons a circle of 8-16 rifts around the player, the amount increasing the lower its health. These rifts then fires telegraphed beams between each pair of rifts in sequence.
  • Rift Claw Circle - The boss summons a circle of 8 rifts around the player, which create sets of eight claws each that extend, spin around the rift, and retract.
  • Triple Beams - The boss summons pairs of rifts on either side of the player, aligned with their direction of motion if they're moving, that create a set of three beams between them after a short telegraph.
  • Vertical Beams - The boss summons rows of rifts above and below the player, which create vertical beams between them after a short telegraph. The boss also spawns rifts on top of the player in an attempt to deal contact damage.

Additionally, at 2/3, 1/3, and no health, the boss will pause in its normal attack sequence, using the following attack instead:

  • Parallax Ray - The boss shoots a massive, highly damaging parallax ray at the player from the background, which sweeps towards them. At the same time, it fires sets of telegraphed parallax bolts from the background. At 0% health, these bolts are fired faster.

After completing the final parallax ray attack, a death animation of it collapsing inward on itself plays.

Aftermath

Once the Rift Denizen has been defeated for the first time, the following will occur:

Tips

  • Rocket boots are preferable to double jumps for this fight due to the precise vertical motion required for some attacks. However, double jumps can still work if the player has enough platforms.
  • Prioritize avoiding the parallax ray due to its high damage, and, in expert mode, the lengthy duration of fractalization it inflicts.
