A much stronger version of Esophage, fought during a blood moon. Because the original wasn't creepy enough, this one comes with more, longer, and spindlier legs. Intended to be fought post-Golem.

Forum page blurb

The Hemorrphage is a significantly harder version of the Esophage, fought during a Blood Moon. While it can be fought after defeating Esophage for the first time in The Pestilence, it is intended to be fought post-Golem.

While it is alive, its exclusive music Sepsis will play; if the Polarities Mod Music sidemod is not enabled, the vanilla track Plantera will play instead.

Spawning

Hemorrphage does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it by using a Fleshy Capsid during a blood moon.

Behavior

Hemorrphage spawns with 8/12 large legs, which are its primary means of locomotion, and 6/8 smaller tentacles which position themselves around the boss. These tentacles will block non-piercing projectiles aimed at the boss, but go limp and cease to block projectiles for 10 seconds after being dealt sufficient damage. The boss pursues the player at all times during the fight, becoming slightly quicker as the fight progresses. The boss has a degree of ability to pursue the player in the air, albeit erratically.

Hemorrphage alternates randomly between several attacks (never repeating the same attack twice in a row), some of which are either exclusive to or made harder in Expert Mode, and some of which can only be performed if certain criteria are met:

  • Blood Vomit - Hemorrphage faces upwards, briefly shooting two small jets of harmless blood particles upwards at a slight angle from each other, before shooting two dense clusters of blood into the air, which rain back down over a large area on either side of the boss. Below 2/3 health, if no bloodsaws are active, the boss will shoot a pair of converging blood streams upwards after the initial vomit.
  • Charge - Hemorrphage roars, nullifying the player's remaining flight time and dismounting them from any mount they may be using. The boss also directly charges the player very quickly during this roar.
  • Teleport - Hemorrphage jumps directly into the air, before roaring and teleporting directly above the player, legs flying out to the sides as the boss falls. This attack has a 20 second cooldown, but the boss will always use this attack, ignoring said cooldown, if the player is too far away.
  • Bloodsaws - Hemorrphage spins around, shooting four bloodsaw projectiles which fall for a brief period before beginning to home in on the player. This attack cannot be used while another set of bloodsaws is active. Below 2/3 of its maximum health, the boss instead shoots six bloodsaws.
  • Blood Spray - Hemorrphage faces the player, briefly shooting a small jet of blood particles, before releasing a continuous stream of blood at the player. Below 2/3 of its maximum health, the boss also shoots a pair of secondary streams at an angle from the main stream. In Expert Mode, the main stream's angle is adjusted slightly to account for gravity. This attack cannot be used while any bloodsaws are active.
  • Platelet rings - Hemorrphage shoots a set of bloody platelets which form a ring around the player, spiraling inwards. Below 2/3 health, the boss instead creates four such rings in rapid succession.
  • Blood Tentacles - The boss emits a higher-pitched roar and its tentacles (both active and inactive) stick directly outwards from its body, shooting jets of particles for a brief time before rapidly spraying randomly-curving blood outwards. Below 2/3 health, the tentacles wave slightly during this attack.

Aftermath

Once the Hemorrphage has been defeated for the first time, the following will occur:

Tips

  • Getting too far away from the boss makes the blood vomit and blood tentacle attacks essentially impossible to avoid, so staying within a certain range is recommended.
  • Gaining height when Hemorrphage jumps into the air and dropping when it teleports can help to give the player extra time to avoid its legs. Activating a fast-moving Mount is another way to dodge this attack.
  • Making an arena with multiple platforms means the loss of flight caused by the charge attack is significantly less punishing. Additionally, the boss' legs are much easier to avoid if the player is slightly above the platform they're on.
  • Since Hemorrphage's tentacles attract homing projectiles, using Chlorophyte Bullets is not as effective as it would be otherwise.

Trivia

  • Its name is a portmanteau of hemorrhage and bacteriophage.
