The Paingiver in action

Whacking enemies with the weapon.

The Paingiver is an Post-Moon Lord weapon dropped from the Secret Ultimate Pain boss. It rapidly summons multiple pain projectiles that home in and explode each use. It will randomly pick an attack pattern from the following 4:

• Summons projectiles around the player that move towards the cursor.
• Summons projectiles from the sky that travel towards the cursor.
• Summons projectiles at the cursor which travel outwards in random directions.
• Summon projectiles in a ring around the cursor that travel towards it, projectiles fired this way always pass through tiles.

The weapon can be used as a generic swinging melee weapon by right clicking, and hitting an enemy will play the slap sound effect. Additionally every 15 enemies hit with the weapon this way will cause humorous text to appear berating the player for using the weapon this way:

• "Seriously, you have a weapon that summons powerful homing projectiles..."
• "Yet you choose to whack enemies over the head with it..."
• "Like come on, are you some kind of true-melee player or something?"
• "You do know you're only dealing a fraction of the weapon's damage like this right??"
• "Just left click already!!!"
• "!$%!£&%!"

Hitting an enemy with the skulls after at least one of these messages has appeared will cause the following message to appear:

• "See that's better now isn't it?"

Right clicking the weapon in the inventory will cycle its damage class in the order: Generic > Melee > Ranged > Magic > Summon, allowing it to receive the respective buffs for that specific class.

Notes

• The weapon can only receive universal modifiers, but they will remain on the weapon when changing the damage type.
• If the player hasn't defeated The Painbringer the tooltip will be "You haven't experienced pain yet, why do you have this?"
• It is functionality completely identical to the Staff of the Painbringer.
• The projectiles will pass through tiles as long as they are above the player's cursor.
• The explosions also have the pain face in them.
• Hitting enemies 100 times with the alt attack of the weapon will unlock the "No... that's not how you're meant to use it!!!!" achievement.
• Every single use a generic text to speech voice will say "The pain":

Trivia

• The weapon resembles a ThePain Mask in the shape of a sword, however it does not act as a sword.
• This item is currently the most powerful item in the mod, tied with The Staff of the Painbringer, and surpassing the Celestial Stone Cannon
  • Along with The Staff of the Painbringer it is also the only item in the mod to have the 11* rarity.
• This weapon was in the mod but was unobtainable for quite some time, it became obtainable first from the April fools boss, and then from shimmering.
