"An entity bent on inflicting as much pain as possible to whoever it finds, using its skulls of judgement to deliver the pain. Even when near death it won’t stop finding ways to inflict pain, even if it causes pain upon itself."

The Painbringer is a Post-Moon Lord boss summoned using a Mysterious Skull, and is exclusive to the 1.4.4 version of the mod. Most of its attacks use skulls of pain in different patterns, either being fired from the boss itself or summoned around the player, which explode on impact with the player or after a delay. When low on health, 4 Shattered Crystal of Pain separate from it and attack on their own while orbiting the boss. Its expert accessory allows the player to be saved from death once every 2 minutes. The boss has the ability to teleport directly above the player if they move too far away from it.

Phase 1

When spawned the boss will float directly above above the player, before performing the following attack cycle:

  • It will orbit the player while quickly firing groups of 4 skulls of pain at the player.
  • It will fly above the player, before summoning skulls of pain from above the screen with randomised space between them, one will always spawn above the player
  • It will them loosely fly around the player while firing 4 groups of 4 skulls of pain in a plus shape
  • It will then fly above the player again, before summoning rings of stationary skulls of pain around the player, which charge towards the player's location after a small delay.
  • The attack pattern will then repeat.

Phase 2

At 70% life it will stop attacking and fly below the player and one of its large crystals will shattered and break off, it will then resume attacking the player.

  • It will fly above the player and will summon stationary skulls of pain randomly around the player that deal no damage when spawned, and explode after a short delay
  • It will remain above the player, and summons waves of projectiles from both sides of the screen, with randomised space between them, one will always spawn level with the player
  • It will then repeat its attacks from phase 1, but at a faster fire rate
  • It will then repeat the entire attack pattern

Phase 3

At 40% life it will stop attacking and fly below the player and the other large crystal will shattered and break off, it will then resume attacking the player.

  • The boss will constantly dash to a random locations around the player, firing out a burst of skulls of pain in a random directions after a short delay.
  • It will then orbit the player while rapidly summoning stationary skulls of pain which charge towards the player after a short delay.
  • It will then repeat its attacks from phase 1 and 2, but at a faster fire rate
  • It will then repeat the entire attack pattern

Phase 4

At 10% life it will stop attacking and fly below the player, and the 4 crystals connected to it will break off, and will spawn as Shattered Crystal of Pain, which orbit the boss with 90 degrees separation between them.

  • The boss is invincible during this phase and flies above the player, instead the player will need to defeat all the crystals orbiting it, the crystals will orbit faster for each crystal destroyed.
  • The crystals will fire out mini skulls of pain away from the boss at a fast rate, and will fire out an extra skull at a faster rate for each shattered crystal that has been destroyed.
  • After a few seconds the crystals will stop spinning, and the boss will stop moving. The crystals will play a charging sound effect, then spin in the opposite direction while summoning a rapid stream of skulls, creating a pattern.
  • They will then stop rotating for a second and will repeat these 2 attacks.
  • The boss also now deals contact damage, to prevent moving to the center of the crystals and avoiding all the projectiles.

Phase 5

Once all 4 crystals have been destroyed, the boss will become vulnerable again, however it will now gain 66% damage reduction and become immune to all debuffs.

  • It keeps its distance from the player, and charges up one final attack, a massive barrage of crystal shards. The shards start off accurate, but quickly begin to become more inaccurate, being fired in a larger cone. The boss loses 1000 health per second while performing this attack.
  • It will continue to charge up and perform this attack until it is defeated.

Most attacks are launched at a higher velocity on Expert and even more on Master, and many attacks also have more projectiles. On For the Worthy the projectiles have an even higher velocity and even more are summoned.

The Painbringer teleporting above the player after they get too far away.

Quotes

The boss has different quotes when summoned, defeated, or if the player dies, which vary on a few different factors. These quotes appear both above the boss and in the chat.

If the boss has not been defeated before on a regular world:
Summoned: "Ready to experience pain?"
Defeated: "Guess.... you could.... handle the Pain..."
Player dies: "Guess you couldn't handle the Pain?"

If the boss has been defeated before:
Summoned: "Ready to experience pain again?"
Defeated: "Well... you did it... again..."
Player dies: "You handled it once before, but not this time!"

If the boss has not been defeated before on a For the Worthy world:
Summoned: "Ready to prove your worth?"
Defeated: "You....are.....Worthy!"
Player dies: "You are not worthy!"

When hit directly by the boss (contact damage)
"How's that for pain?"
When the boss teleports it will say:
"You cannot escape the pain that easily!"
If the boss has not been defeated in a world and the Player uses the Zenith on it it will have an additional quote:
"Zenith means no Pain >:("

Notes

  • In the final phase The boss loses 2000 health each time it performs its attack, and the boss can kill itself using it.
  • All attacks are briefly telegraphed with a pinkish line that quick fades away
  • The boss never deals any contact damage.
  • Using the Zenith on the boss if it has not been defeated will play a fart sound effect each time it is hit, but the damage is not affected.
  • The Moon Lord theme will play while the boss is alive.
  • If Calamity's Vengeance mode is enabled the boss's health is multiplied by 1.25 and the damage of all attacks is multiplied by 1.33.
    • For Death mode the boss's health is multiplied by 1.5 and the damage of all attacks is multiplied by 1.66.

Trivia

  • The final attack is a reference to its bestiary line "Even when near death it won’t stop finding ways to inflict pain, even if it causes pain upon itself", as the boss literally damages itself when attacking.
  • This is the second post Moon Lord enemy in the mod, after the Moonling, and the first boss.
  • This boss started off as an April fools boss called "Ultimate Pain", before it was reworked into a real boss
