The Empty Soul Gem is sold by the Occultist. Normally it is useless, but if one is held in the player's inventory or Void Bag, killing an enemy will fill it.

When filled, it will add a Soul Gem to your inventory, which is a Pre-Hardmode crafting material used to craft Necromancy themed items, and Life Crystals.
