“An esper with a ruby red gem in it's forehead. The gem is the source of it's power. Carbuncle can reflect projectiles back at it's attacker.
— Bestiary (Carbuncle)
Carbuncle is a pre-hardmode boss. It is intended to be fought after Phantom Train, but before Queen Bee.[1]
Spawning
Carbuncle can be summoned by using Carbuncle's Ruby. It must be used on the Surface otherwise the boss will not spawn.
Behavior
Carbuncle has 3 stages and is able to move through blocks to get to the player. During the first phase, Carbuncle reflects projectiles back at the player. It attacks by slowly levitating towards the player and dealing contact damage. Carbuncle will also occasionally teleport around.
When Carbuncle falls below 67% hp (2,000 / 4,000 / 6,000), it transforms into its second form. Carbuncle will start moving faster and attacking more aggressively. It also gains a new attack where it summons 3 pearl orbs that spin outward in a circle and deal damage on contact.
Finally when Carbuncle falls below 33% hp (1,000 / 2,000 / 3,000) it transforms into its third and final form. In this form Carbuncle loses its reflective barrier, and projectiles are not longer reflected back at the player. However carbuncle will receive another speed boost and enhancements to its attacks. He will now summon an additional ring of pearl projectiles when it attacks. He also gains a new attack where pearl projectiles will fall from the sky and explode on impact.
The speed and frequency of its attacks also depends on the world Difficulty.
