Lepus is a large rabbit boss that can be summoned anywhere and at any time of day with the Suspicious Looking Egg, which is dropped by Lepus itself, Corrupt Bunnies, Vicious Bunnies and Diseaster Bunnies during the Easter season.

While Lepus is alive, its exclusive Lepus theme will play.

Behavior

Upon spawning, Lepus appears above the player as it plummets down, creating a stomp. The boss hops towards the player for most of the battle. Every third regular jump Lepus performs twice and after landing, being at a certain distance from the player, begins to charge. The charging state become shorter as the Lepus' heatlh decreases. Within a few seconds, if not interrupted by dealing damage to the boss, charging is completed and Lepus performs 5-6 enhanced jumps, laying three small eggs at the last jump.

After 5-6 regular jumps Lepus can perform a powerful attack: he performs 5 jumps, each accompanied by spawning small eggs, and the 6th jump leaves behind big egg. In Expert Mode, it will gain an additional powerful chain jump attack, making four fast jumps and in the end, if Lepus is above the player at a certain distance, falling on the player creating a damaging area-of-effect stomp and a large egg.

Lepus lays two types of Lepus Eggs: small ones that hatch Diseaster Bunnies, and bigger ones that hatch another weaker Lepuses. These eggs can be damaged and destroyed by the player before hatching. A maximum of five Lepus can be spawned from the large eggs laid by the original Lepus, and after there are five, no more large eggs will be laid. Each Lepus will drop items, but only the last one will drop loot. If Lepus is defeated while an unhatched large egg is still present, it will spawn around 3–6 Diseaster Bunnies instead of a new Lepus.

Notes

  • Defeating Lepus fulfills the requirement for the Dryad NPC to spawn.
  • The large number of Diseaster Bunnies spawned by Lepus, combined with the fact that he drops his summon item when he dies, makes Lepus a viable method for getting Biome Keys.
  • Lepus can be a renewable source of coins once the player gets late Pre-Hardmode gear, since he will always drop his Suspicious Looking Egg.

Tips

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Lepus, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Lepus Strategies.
  • Lepus can be trapped easily, since it cannot fit through small gaps, but its smaller Diseaster Bunnies can still reach the player.
  • Trapping Lepus in a deep enough pit and firing downward can also be effective.
  • Lepus can easily overwhelm beginners by spawning more, weaker versions of himself, so destroying the Lepus Eggs should be a priority.
  • It is possible to farm coins by creating a pit with traps (preferably Lihzahrd) and jumping in with the traps disabled. The player can then grab the coins and grapple out (with no fear due to all the dropped hearts).
  • Lepus can be attacked while the player takes low to no damage by making a tall staircase mostly because Lepus has such a large and odd AI causing him to slide down stairs at the end of a leap, however Diseaster Bunnies can use stairs correctly.
  • If Lepus spawns too many clones, try going a distance away to get some to despawn. One can always check the minimap to see how many Lepus there are.

Trivia

  • In the original game, music Underground Hallow would play when Lepus is alive.
  • The word "Lepus" means "hare" in Latin, and is used today as the name of the genus that hares and jackrabbits belong to. Rabbits, known alternatively as "bunnies" and associated with Easter, are not actually members of Lepus.
  • Due to the bosses in Consolaria all having a different type of master mide drop, Lepus having a pet, Turkor the Ungrateful having a mount, and Ocram having a light pet, it is possible to equip every one of Consolaria's master mode items at once.
  • The Bestiary entry for Lepus: "As if its size wasn't troublesome enough, this rabbit can reproduce through colorful eggs, spread around the world in Spring for fools to pick up."
