Ostara's Gift is the Expert Mode accessory drop from Lepus.
While equipped, whenever the player kills a non-critter NPC, a 
Chocolate Egg appears at the killed NPC's position. This egg is technically an NPC too, with 30 hit points. It loses 5 hit points per second. Once the Chocolate Egg is "killed", between one and three 
Hearts and 
Stars each appear at the egg's position.
