"Scales like shields, teeth like swords, and that breath is death."
Drakon is a pre-Hardmode boss that can be fought in The Underworld. While Drakon can be fought at any time, he is intended to be fought after the Eater of Worlds and Brain of Cthulhu. He is on relatively the same tier as Luna.
Spawn
Drakon can be summoned when a coin is destroyed from its hoard. Alternatively, it can be manually summoned through the use of a Dragon's Gold while in The Underworld. Dragon's Gold can be obtained through transforming a standard Gold coin.
Behavior
Drakon's attacks are very simple, but they hit hard and are plentiful in projectiles.
Leaving The Underworld will cause Drakon to become immune to all sources of damage.
Attacks
- Flies above the target, breathing flames.
- Flies to the side of the target, shooting fireballs in the target's direction.
- Makes 3 rapid dashes toward the target.
In Expert Mode
- Moves faster overall.
- Projectiles move faster and are more accurate.
- Will breath fire above the target 3 times while under 50% health.
- Fires additional fireballs when under 20% health.
- Will make 5 dashes instead of 3.
- Will attempt to grab the target and bring them above the closest source of lava. When above lava, Drakon will throw the target toward the lava, temporarily stopping the target for moving or colliding with platforms. If struck 12 times while held, Drakon will release his grasp.
- While below 50% health, Drakon will take 15% less damage.
In Master Mode
- Moves faster overall.
- Projectiles move faster and are more accurate.
- Will breath fire above the target 4 times while under 50% health.
- Will make 6 dashes instead of 3.
- Drakon requires 20 hits to release his lava grasp.
- While below 20% health, Drakon gains an additional 10% damage reduction. This stacks with the Expert 15% bonus.
In Pandemonium Mode
- Drakon is 20% larger.
- Moves much faster than even in Master Mode.
- The fire breath is significantly longer.
- Will always fire additional fireballs.
- The delay between dashes is much shorter, and he dashes much faster.
- Drakon requires 40 hits to release his lava grasp.
- Deals contact damage still while a target is within his grasp.
Notes
- Only one Drakon can be summoned at a time. Nothing will happen if the summon item is used while Drakon is still alive or if the user is not in The Underworld.
- Drakon's lava grasp attack can sometimes place players inside tiles.
- Drakon's fireball attack is very similar to the fireball attack from Spazmatism.
- Many vanilla and modded items that require Hellstone to craft now additionally require Drakon Scales to craft, including the Molten Pickaxe.
Tips
- Building an arena in the pre-generated Dragon Hoard can make it easier to clear out area in The Underworld to fight him.
- Being high in the air when Drakon initiates his fire breath attack can make it much easier to drop down and dodge.
- Obsidian Skin potions or other lava immunity items can prevent Drakon's lava grasp attack from being deadly.
Trivia
- The Bestiary entry for the Drakon: "Dragons are ancient fire-breathing sentients that hoard treasure. Lucky this one wasn't fully grown yet or there could've been a problem."
- Drakon has been a planned boss/enemy in the mod since version 1.0.
- Drakon is said to not be fully grown, explaining why he has such low defense, as most dragons depicted in folklore are said to have impenetrable scales.
- If one is fast enough, almost all the coins in the Dragon Hoard can be collected before Drakon kills the player.
- Drakon's theme is Keeper of Ashes, which is composed by Antibody.
- If the Anarchist Music add-on is disabled, Boss 3 will play instead.
- If the Boss Checklist Mod is installed, its unique despawn message will be "Drakon returns to slumber under its hoard."
