Vampirism (Aequus)

Vampirism is a unique debuff granted by the Vampire Squid which provides no detriments. However, when the buff wears off naturally, you will become a Vampire.

Being a Vampire

Being a Vampire makes your eyes glow red, allowing you to see yourself in the dark. And also passively decreases your aggro by 1000, making many enemies ignore you. Dealing damage to enemies or players in pvp has a 12.5*1/8 (12.5%) to heal the player by 2 health, this lifesteal effect works during the day and night, as long as you don't have the Sunlight debuff.

You will also take double the damage from On Fire!, Hellfire, Frostburn, Frostbite, and Blue Fire.

Daytime

During the day, no additional stats are granted, even if you are deep within the Caverns. Exposing yourself to sunlight grants the Sunlight debuff, which causes the following effects.

  • Disables natural life regeneration
  • Disables the lifesteal effect
  • Food buffs like Well Fed will wear off instantly.
  • 40% decreased life, however each point of defense will protect 1 health point.
    • The defense used to calculate health protection is calculated before the Sunlight debuff reduces defense.
  • 60% reduced defense.
  • 50% reduced damage.
  • 50% reduced knockback.

Background Walls protect the player from being exposed from the Sun, allowing them to not get any disadvantages from being a vampire. A solid block atleast ~8 blocks above the player will also protect from sunlight.

Nighttime

During the night, you gain the Cold Skin buff, which provides a plentiful amount of stat boosts. This buff is applied globally, and works whether or not you are exposed to the Moon. The buff has the following effects:

Cures

Dying with the Vampirism debuff still in effect will clear it, without transforming the player into a Vampire. Otherwise the only other option is using a Pale Pufferfish, caught during a Blood Moon. The Pale Pufferfish also has a higher catchrate while you are a Vampire.

Notes

  • While the Cold Skin buff is the only mention of the "attacks may lifesteal" effect, you can still lifesteal without the buff applied.
  • Being a Vampire is a great choice for maximizing Necromancy, due to the 2 extra ghost minion slots.
  • You do not take x10 damage from the Stake Launcher, or extra damage from Silver Bullets.
  • While the Bloodthirst Potion, Vampire enemy, Vampire Knives, Vampire Frog Staff, Vampire set, and other vampire, nighttime, or life steal related things do sound like they would have special interactions with a Vampire player, they do not.
