Quicksilver

Some quicksilver in a cave.
See also: Lava

Quicksilver is a silver liquid found deep in the Cavern layer and in the Depths, It replaces Lava in Depths worlds and doesn’t allow lava to be placed anywhere. It has the same placement in the world as Lava

Contact with Quicksilver initially does not do anything but give a positive buff called Mercury Footing. After 2 or more seconds it inflicts the Mercury Poisoning debuff both to a the player or any submerged NPCs. Quicksilver also slows movement the way Water and Lava does. The Crystal Skin Potion makes players immune the Mercury Poisoning debuff meaning they can freely swim in quicksilver. The Amalgam Amulet and its upgraded will allow players to be safely submerged in Quicksilver for 4 more seconds before the Mercury Poisoning debuff is applied. Additionally the Stone Rose doubles the duration that the player can be submerged in quicksilver before the Mercury Poisoning debuff is applied.

Quicksilver is very similar to Lava in how it flows. Being very viscous and slow moving. Also unlike lava quicksilver does not emit light or glow. Quicksilver can be moved by the player via a bucket or pump. After flowing 50 blocks in a direction, quicksilver will begin to evaporate, causing the source to be lost. Quicksilver will still destroy most furniture and platforms, except for certain furniture like lava.

Unlike lava, quicksilver is much more safe, throwing items into quicksilver, no matter the rarity won’t be destroyed like lava. Additionally you are freely able to place blocks in quicksilver and do not need to use gravity effected blocks to clear out quicksilver.

Arquerite Ore produces half a block's volume of Quicksilver when mined in the Depths and nothing in the Underworld. No creature in the Depths can spawn quicksilver.

Similar to water changing color in biome, quicksilver is instantly changed to lava when either crossing onto the underworld side of the Drunk Seed or when the Core Globe has been used. The same is also for lava.

Crafting

A showcase of all three liquid reactions with quicksilver

Like water, lava, honey and Shimmer, quicksilver can be used as a minor crafting station. It works just like the other four; in order to use it the player only has to stand nearby. Creation of items from a body of quicksilver does not lower the quicksilver level at all.

Fishing

Fishing in quicksilver requires the use of the Silver Liner, Quicksilverproof Fishing Hook, or bait found in the Depths.

  • It is not possible to get other catches normally obtained in water or lava.
  • It is advisable to make a large artificial quicksilver lake near the surface where the enemies are less dangerous.
    • Do note that while this may be more difficult at first, it will save many deaths and coins.
    • This also requires you to collect Depths bait before you can fish, and you may end up needing a lot of bait before you get a quicksilverproof fishing hook.
    • If you have access to Pumps, a Bottomless Quicksilver Bucket or a Wet Bomb (the latter two are both acquired by fishing in quicksilver or lava) making an artificial quicksilver lake is quite easy

Notes

The gif shows the longest amount of time someone can survive without getting the Mercury Poisoning debuff
  • The maximum amount of time you can survive in quicksilver is 8 seconds by equipping the following:
    • Amalgam Amulet (or upgrades)
    • Stone Rose (or upgrades)
      • This can allow the player to mindlessly explore the lower caverns and the depths without the fear of staying in quicksilver for too long.
    • Unlike lava, items such as the Master Ninja Gear and Armor does not allow the player to reduce the damage and time by Mercury Poisoning.
    • The Silver Slippers and its side/upgrades can be used to stand on quicksilver similar to the Water Walking Potion
  • Contact with quicksilver dislodges many placed furniture items and most kinds of Platforms, except for certain tiles also immune to lava.
  • All enemies will be infected by quicksilver no matter if its a boss, worm or other.
  • Despite being able to have blocks placed in it, the presence of quicksilver prevents grass from spreading to dirt within an approximate two-tile radius.
  • Occasional quicksilver "drips" from the ceiling are a special effect, which cause no damage. The player can create them with a Magic Quicksilver Dropper.
    • Dripping Quicksilver is not effected when changing drunk seed sides or using the Core Globe.
  • Quicksilverfalls (quicksilver next to half tiles when more than half a tile in height) does not cause or give the Mercury footing buff or the Mercury Posioning Debuff.
  • The Beach Ball bounces off of quicksilver.

Tips

Despite not directly damaging similar to lava, quicksilver's Mercury Poisoning debuff if in it for long enough can sometimes surpass the amount of dps that lava contact damage gives.

  • The Remix seed causes quicksilver to instantly give Mercury Posioning at its full level to prevent people from swimming away from the main island
    • Mercury Footing is impossible to get on the Remix seed.

Trivia

  • Quicksilver is real life is very poisonous and harmful to human contact, this is much different than positive buff that the quicksilver gives in-game
  • Quicksilver and lava cannot exist in the same world and any item that can spawn lava either ceases to exist, explodes into smoke or spawns quicksilver
  • The concept for quicksilver is from The Depth's forum post.
    • The concept states that if lava and quicksilver were to come into contact that it would make stone, but since they cannot co-exist then this feature is not avalible in-game
  • In development versions and one public beta the Quicksilverfall had an odd bug that caused it to glow, it was one of the last things to be fixed with quicksilver before the 0.6.0 release.
    • Due to the bug being in the development version for so long the Glowing Quicksilver Banner was made as a tribute to the bug when it was fixed
