Sins (Shards of Atheria)
Sin is a mechanic introduced by Shards of Atheria. When the player creates a character for the first time, they start with a Sinful Soul, which can be turned into one of the 7 Sinful Souls. The Wall of Flesh will drop another Sinful Soul and a Sinful Armament, which when used, transforms into either a Weapon or Accessory based on the active sin of the user.

Clensing
Only one sin can be active at a time however they can be removed with the Virtuous Dagger. Removing a sin with the Virtuous Dagger replaces it with the Shards of Atheria/Virtuous SoulVirtuous Soul buff. It increases defense by 10, damage by 10%, and causes enemies to also take damage when coming in contact with the player. Every time the player with Virtuous Soul deals damage to an enemy it increases Purification by 1. When purification reaches over 35, the next critical hit will create an explosion which damages all enemies on screen.
