Nightmare is a Hardmode boss able to be fought after Plantera. It is a large, biomechanical entity with a gravity manipulator at its base and long, mechanical arms at its sides. It uniquely drops Nightmare Core X and Nightmare Core X Fragments.

Spawn

Nightmare cannot spawn naturally and must be summoned by using a Strange Device at night.

When summoned, Nightmare will rise from the ground in front of the player, intangible. The fight begins once Nightmare becomes opaque. During the battle, it will attempt to stay a short distance to the side and above the player, and moves in a bobbing motion. Though Nightmare itself will not try to ram the player, this bobbing motion can sometimes cause Nightmare to collide with the player, dealing damage.


Nightmare must be attacked at its "face" to deal damage.

While above 10% health, Nightmare will attack with the following:

  • Shooting a barrage of lasers from its arms
  • Shooting destructible homing purple orbs
  • Swaps to the other side of and aligns horizontally with with the player, charging several beams from its arms before firing sustained lasers

While the gravity manipulator is not destroyed, Nightmare will occasionally activate it, inflicting Amplified Gravity (Metroid Mod) on nearby players. After a period of time, the gravity manipulator will deactivate, cancelling the debuff.

Nightmare's arms have collision and stop projectiles, making it harder to target the gravity manipulator if you are unable to pierce them. However, if it is defeated, Nightmare will be unable to inflict the debuff for the remainder of the fight.

As Nightmare's "face" takes damage over the fight, it will break, revealing a slimy biological face that will change in color as it takes more damage.

When Nightmare reaches 10% health, it will turn into a Core X. From this point on, the Core X will attempt to ram into the player. When the Core X takes damage, it will flash and become invulnerable temporarily. As the Core X takes damage, the shell will change color from white to yellow to red.

Tips

  • Nightmare's destructible homing projectiles can make your own homing projectiles miss. However, using homing projectiles can make attacking the gravity manipulator easier by aiming under Nightmare's arm.
  • The Solar Beam is the only beam addon upgrade that can pierce Nightmare's arm.

Trivia

Nightmare debuted in Metroid Fusion and needed to be defeated to gain the Gravity Suit in that game. This is referenced in the mod by Nightmare's unique drops being used to create the Terra Gravity Suit addon
