Kraid is a Hardmode boss intended to be fought after Queen Slime and before Phantoon. He is the first Hardmode boss you fight from the mod. It is the only source of Kraid Tissue and the Unknown Plasma Beam.

Spawn

Kraid can be summoned using the Variation Matrix anywhere in the world at any time.

Behavior

Upon being summoned, Kraid will appear on either side of the player and gradually make his way toward them.
Kraid will stay about 25 tiles away from the player, not moving even if the player gets immensely close to him, but once apart more than 25 tiles, he will then move toward the player again.
To deal damage to Kraid, the player will need to target his face and make him open his mouth, since with his mouth closed, damage is significantly reduced. But once his mouth is open, the player can deal full damage to him, that is, until he closes his mouth again, to which, the process needs to be repeated. If Kraid is obstructed from either spawning underground or behind a large number of tiles, he will simply clip right through them to get to the player.
As incoming damage accumulates, Kraid's skin will deepen in color, progressing down to yellow, orange, and lastly, red.

Attacks

  • With his forefront hand, Kraid will occasionally swipe and send out an echo-like slash that only goes so far before fading away.
  • With his rear hand, Kraid will swipe and send out two boomerang-shaped claws (although, they won't come back as opposed to actual boomerangs).
  • From the three large holes in his belly, Kraid will shoot out spikes aimed directly toward the player, in a similar fashion to the boomerang-shaped claws.

Tips

The fight can be fought with a proper arena set up, with platforms up to where Kraid's head is and staying in that close range. From there, all you need to worry about is dodging the boomerang claws and echo slash, given that the belly spikes don't curve up enough to hit you (that is if you're at the previously mentioned height and range from Kraid).

Trivia

  • Kraid originates and debuted from the original Metroid on the NES as a major boss to progress and access Tourian. Currently, his sprite resembles the look from the GBA's Metroid: Zero Mission, a reimagining/remake of Metroid, serving the same role as in the NES installment. Although defeating Kraid in the mod awards the ability to craft the Varia Suit V2, given its current sprite, Kraid in Metroid: Zero Mission awards the Speed Booster instead due to Samus acquiring the Varia Suit before the encounter. In Super Metroid, however, upon defeating Kraid there will allow the player to acquire the Varia Suit in the next room, which is what the mod references.
  • Kraid's theme, respectively named Kraid/Phantoon Theme, was composed by Paradoxx Productions.
