Grenade Launcher
Demoman's Starter Primary

The Grenade Launcher is a primary weapon for the Demoman. It fires a grenade that deals splash damage with knockback. However, the projectile that this weapon launches bounces off surface and is affected by gravity. Additionally, the Demoman can perform a grenade jump by shooting below him, while standing on the ground and waiting for the grenade to detonate, propelling him upwards with some self-damage. This weapon is a stock weapon and can be obtained immediately if the Demoman class is chosen.

Notes

  • Since the Grenade Launcher uses local immunity frames, a single grenade can hit and damage multiple enemies simultaneously.
  • Grenades have a slower velocity than bullets. In addition, they also ricochet off tiles, are affected by gravity, and only explode from enemy impact or when their fuse expires.
  • Grenade jumps launch the player upwards with no horizontal velocity.

Strategies

  • The Grenade Launcher is best used for medium-ranged combat.
    • Since this weapon supports focus shot, the Demoman can fire homing grenades that are unaffected by gravity, allowing for long-ranged capabilities. With this in mind, he can stop worrying about missing his target.
    • The Demoman may want to switch to his close-ranged weapon, like the Bottle if he is worried about getting self-damaged from his grenades' explosions. However, it is better advised to never be in close contact with enemies unless if Demoman has a loadout suited for melee combat.
  • Grenade jumping is less efficient for quick movement due to the lack of horizontal acceleration than rocket jumping.
    • However, this can be somewhat negated with the Chargin' Targe or any other shields.
    • Furthermore, the Demoman must keep track of his health to avoid accidentally blowing himself up.
  • The Grenade Launcher's single reload style can diminish damage output. Therefore, it's important for the Demoman to know when to reload.
  • Grenades can only hit a single enemy (not including the explosion which have a small splash radius). This means the Grenade Launcher shouldn't be relied upon for crowd control.
    • Demoman must be careful of using this weapon against bosses consisting of multiple segments or summoned minions.

Trivia

  • The Grenade Launcher, like other explosive weapons in the Team Fortress 2 mod, originally had the ability to damage friendly NPCs.
    • However, this was changed due to the addition of the Flymeal.
