The Protective Talisman is a Pre-Hardmode ranged weapon that requires no ammunition to use. When hitting an enemy while the user is affected by a debuff (for exceptions, see below), a variety of effects is triggered:

• The projectile deals 50% additional damage
• The struck enemy is afflicted with Misfortune, increasing critical chance against that enemy
• A randomly selected debuff of the player has its remaining duration reduced by 3 seconds
• If the randomly selected debuff can apply to enemies as well: the enemy is inflicted with 3 seconds of the selected debuff

However, the following debuffs do not trigger this effect:

• Self-inflicted debuffs (such as Tipsy, Potion Sickness and Mana Sickness)
• Location-based debuffs (such as Mighty Wind, Water Candle, Creative Shock and Horrified)
• Harmless debuffs (Wet, Stinky and some others)
