Underling is a pre-Hardmode boss that can be fought during the night. Underling can be fought after Skeletron has been defeated and is intended to be fought before the Wall of Flesh.

Spawn

Underling can be summoned manually by crafting and then using a Chaos Serpent during the night.

Behavior

Throughout the entire fight, Underling will extend and retract the spikes on its body armor, changing the stats of the body segments. As each body segment takes damage, it can break and permanently remain extended. This happens after a segment has taken 150 damage. The Underling has 25 segments in total.

Underling will despawn when it turns day.

Attacks

• Underling will charge the target.
• Underling will charge the target and shoot fireballs in the direction of their target.
• Underling will idly move above their target, rapidly extending and retract its spikes. When it extends its spikes during this attack, shrapnel will be fired from 80% of body segments toward their target.
• Underling will idly move above their target, with large walls of fireballs being summoned from the four corners of the screen.

Life Dependent Changes

• While under 65% health, the Underling's tail segment will fire large shrapnel at nearby players.
• As Underling's health lowers, it will move faster.
• As Underling's health lowers, projectiles it shoots will move faster and deal increased damage.
• As Underling's health lowers, in any attack where it will idly move above their target, they will instead charge their target.

In Expert Mode

• Underling moves faster overall.
• The amount of damage required to make a body segment remain extended increases to 262.
• 90% of body segments will fire projectiles when applicable.
• While under 40% health, the Underling will fire body shrapnel whenever it extends its spikes.
• While under 40% health, the Underling will fire fireballs at the target during its third attack (spike attack).

In Master Mode

• Total length increased to 35.
• Underling moves faster overall.
• The fireball walls will move faster.
• The amount of damage required to make a body segment remain extended increases to 375.

In Pandemonium Mode

• Total length increased to 50.
• Underling moves much faster overall.
• The amount of damage required to make a body segment remain extended increases to 750.

Notes

• Only one Underling can be summoned at a time. Nothing will happen if the summon item is used while Underling is still present or if it is not night.
• Natural Fallen Stars are unable to damage the Underling in any fashion.

Tips

• A large open arena can make it easier to dodge all of Underling's attacks.
• Try to avoid its head or extended body segments, they can deal massive damage, especially in Expert Mode or higher difficulties.
• Piercing weapons can devastate the Underling. Specifically ritual blade and scythe lunge attacks can tear through the boss.

Trivia

• The Bestiary entry for the Underling: "A creature from an unknown plane that invaded our world, intent on some unknown objective. Be wary."

• Underling's theme is Disarray, which is composed by Antibody.
  • Antibody based Inferior Chaos off of a song by beanieswag called Silent Observation which was Underling's theme from previous versions.
  • If the Anarchist Music add-on is disabled, Boss 2 will play instead.
• If the Boss Checklist Mod is installed, its unique despawn message will be "The Underling slips through a portal to the chaos realm."
• The Underling is one of the many chaos themed bosses in or planned for the mod.
  • The Underling's despawn message and bestiary entry allude to the fact that chaos creatures are invading the world of Terraria from an alternate dimension.
  • Given the boss' name 'Underling' and that it is the first chaos enemy players can encounter, it is believed to only be a scout of some kind for more powerful chaos creatures.
