This page is about the Starfarers in general. For the boss, see Asphodene and Eridani.

The Starfarers are companions that will aid the player, the Starbearer, throughout their journey. They serve as the main gateway to the mod's mechanics, including but not limited to the Stellar Array and Stellar Novas. They will also idly chat with the player, with dialogue lines when the player enters a new biome, summons a boss for the first time, during special weather, when the player is debuffed or when the player deals a critical hit. These additional lines can be disabled in the mod config, or alternatively, can be replayed in the Archive.

The player is able to choose a Starfarer when the Spatial Disk is held for the first time. This decision is semi-permanent per character; the only way to reset your Starfarer choice is through use of a cheat mod to spawn in and use the Debug Disk. The player's choice of Starfarer will be indicated as a cosmetic buff Astral Resonance or Umbral Resonance, depending on their choice of Asphodene or Eridani respectively.

The choice of Starfarer will directly influence what weapons are available to the player during their journey. Additionally, Stellar Novas will receive an extra bonus depending on the chosen Starfarer.

After defeating a boss, the Starfarer will attempt to speak to the player. This is shown in the in-game text chat, with a message "The Spatial Disk is resonating. Left click to interact." Open / Activate with the Spatial Disk will open a dialogue window, and when appropriate, deposit an Essence or boss summon item into the player's inventory.

The Starfarers can also be talked to when the Disk is not resonating, playing idle conversation lines. Repeatedly using the Disk will cause the Starfarer to "run out of things to say" and offer the player fluff dialogue.

There are currently two selectable Starfarers, and two NPC-only Starfarers:

Lore

The Starfarer System

"The Starfarer Incarnations were designed by an ancient civilization as a way to combat threats that were unsolvable by traditional means; the presence of threats that could, in theory, end their universe as they know it. However, they fell before the Starfarer Incarnation was set into motion by a power-hungry alliance of civilizations who feared their power should it be turned against them. They themselves utilized the stolen Starfarer Incarnation, beginning the First Incarnation and summoning the first 7 Starfarers. The newly summoned Starfarers recognized their summoner's misdeeds and destroyed them. As they were now incarnated, the Starfarers attempted to locate and purge the threats to the universe they were made for, but no such threat existed, of course- their premature summoning was a result of meddling, not purpose. Cursed with life, the original Starfarers either chose death, were lost to time, or hid away forever, after countless years of drifting. The only known remaining Starfarer was the very first one summoned, Tsukiyomi. "

"The Starfarer System was activated 2 more times; information of the Second Incarnation is lost to time."

"However, the Third Incarnation created Asphodene, Eridani, and Perseus. Who initiated this ritual is unknown. This summoning was flawed, and it is unknown if the other Starfarers ever incarnated. Furthermore, the Starfarer System itself can not create life perfectly- that secret was lost with time. Mana can only flow at maximum efficiency in a naturally living vessel; as Starfarers are only partially alive, they must form a contract with a living being to exercise their power through them. Technically, first generation Starfarers were born living, so their use of a Starbearer was adopted by observing later generations- they have no need for them normally."
