"An elusive spirit that haunts the Moon."
Crater Demon is a post-Moon Lord boss fought on the Moon. It is typically the first boss the player will encounter on the Moon, and offers a decent challenge to newcomers.
Summoning
Crater Demon does not spawn on its own, and requires the player to summon it with a Daemonic Tablet. It can only be summoned and fought on the Moon at any time.
Behavior
Crater Demon will randomly cycle through various attacks throughout the battle while constantly moving towards the player. It will periodically summon multiple Crater Imps during battle, which will fire Phantasmal Bolts and occasionally charge at the player.
- Crater Demon will summon a small portal, launching volleys of Phantasmal Skulls towards the player.
- Crater Demon will summon and move towards a large portal, disappearing. Moments later, an identical portal will appear elsewhere, and Crater Demon will charge through the portal at the Player, and repeat several times.
- Crater Demon will summon multiple Phantasmal Skulls that remain near it for a few seconds, before volleying them towards the player in a large, inaccurate spread.
During Expert Mode Crater Demon will gain a small speed boost, cycle through its attacks more frequently, and charge faster and more frequently during its regular and portal charge attacks. It will also summon two Phantasmal Skull portals at a time instead of one.
Aftermath
- The Moon Champion will spawn immediately from Crater Demon if defeated for the first time. He can then move in if provided proper housing.
- The Xaoc Key will drop from Crater Demon, allowing players access to the locked Luminite chests inside the Lunar Shrines.
Tips
- Maintaining a fair distance away from Crater Demon is advised to avoid being damaged by his charge attacks, or from being stunlocked.
- A good arena for Crater Demon involves multiple sets of long, flat platforms with distance between them.
- Because wings are useless on the Moon, bringing an extra accessory to boost attack power can make the fight end much faster. Furthermore, the low gravity can lead players to overcompensate and hit the top of the subworld, making them an easy target for Crater Demon and its minions.
- The Osmium Boots will also grant players higher gravity and make them less suspectible to accidentally reaching the top of the subworld.
Trivia
- Crater Demon's theme is Space Invader, composed by the artist Lincolnennis.
- The boss's appearance is a reference to the 1902 French adventure short film Le Voyage dans la Lune. In the film, the Moon is depicted as having a human face and is shot in the right eye by a large cannon.
- Crater Demon was one of the first bosses designed for Macrocosm, and the first boss to officially be coded into the mod.
- Crater Demon could be considered the Moon's analogue for the Eye of Cthulhu, as it is generally the first boss to be fought on this subworld, and has a similar charging attack.
– Crater Demon is a member of a demonic race that invaded the civilization formerly inhabiting the Moon. It is related to the Corites that invade Earth during the Lunar Events.
- The
Bestiary entry for Crater Demon: "This massive meteorite demon is a member of a race that invaded the Moon long ago, and bears the scars of an ancient war."
