Use

The aura surrounding a Contagion Key prior to defeating Plantera.

The Contagion Key is a Hardmode item used to open the Contagion Chest in the Dungeon. Opening a Chest consumes the key. Though unusable until Plantera is defeated, it can be dropped at any time during Hardmode. It has a 0.04*1/2500 (0.04%) chance of dropping from an enemy in The Contagion.

Any enemy in the Contagion that drops coins when killed has a chance of dropping a key, not just biome-exclusive enemies.

Contagion Keys, like other Biome Keys, will display the tooltip "It has been cursed by a powerful Jungle creature" and be surrounded by a purple-red aura prior to defeating Plantera. It will be unable to open the Contagion Chest until Plantera is defeated, although it is usable in other worlds that have Plantera defeated already.
